Keynote (Pat Flynn)

Pat Flynn, creator of the ultra-popular (and helpful) Smart Passive Income brand, will be our opening keynote speaker at #FinCon13

If you’re not already familiar with Pat, you should know that he’s one of the most successful and most transparent online entrepreneurs (something that Forbes recently pointed out).

Pat’s YouTube channel is a wealth of information and his podcast, recently featured in the New York Times, has been downloaded over 2.5 million times.

Pat and financial blogging go way back. Back at #FinCon11, Pat gave a talk entitled, “How to Stand Out of the Crowd“.

We asked Pat why he was excited to return to FinCon (after having missed last year’s conference due to the birth of his daughter) and here’s what he had to say:

“I’m jazzed to come back to FinCon. [#FinCon11] was life-changing for me, and I’ve been hooked on public speaking ever since… I’m also excited because I remember how amazing the [financial blogging] community was at #FinCon11 and even though I’ve spoken a number of times since then, it’s still my favorite conference. My first love, if you will.”

Competition Is Dead: How to Have an Rockstar Blog by Collaborating, Sharing, and Working With Your Competitors
A lot of newbie bloggers (or people who want to blog) hold themselves back because they think:
a) "Well, so many people out there are already doing this so why would anyone listen to me"?
b) I don't want to compete with Leo Babauta (insert other huge blogger name here).

Bloggers are actually some of the most laid back and collaborative people around. Collaborating with your so-called "competition" will actually help you build huge blog, build a reputation with your audience, and even make some sales.

In this session, you will learn:
1. How to find your unique angle in a huge blogosphere.
2. How to share other people's stuff to build your own blog.
3. How to collaborate with other bloggers (and how this can improve email list numbers and sales).

Content vs. Writing: What's the difference? Why should I care?
“Content” is a word that gets thrown around a lot in this industry -- and I wince every time I hear it.
“Content” sounds sterile, neutral, functional, fungible. It fills up the space on your site as effectively as fast food fills up your stomach – and it’s just as forgettable as a cheap cheeseburger.

Your site should be giving information that matters -- which means WRITING, not cubes of print. If you think of this as a chore, i.e., as “content” to be cranked out on schedule, you aren’t doing your readers any favors. Put another way: If you aren’t engaged with the work, it won't be engaging.

Takeaways:
-- Finding topics: "Feeding the beast" can feel daunting; I will offer places to look, i.e., WAY outside the box.
-- Getting started/staying in motion: Wondering how to find time and inspiration? I have *much* to teach you.
-- Being a writer: Various tips, such as how to take the job seriously (while not being a pompous ass); how to make your work stand out in the glut of PF sites; remember that you’re translating some pretty serious jargon into Everyday-ese; developing a sense of purpose/mission (again, while not being arrogant).

Equity Crowdfunding: Will Non-Accredited Investors Really Expand Investment Capital?
Since the signing of the Jobs Act in April 2012, momentum has been building for national crowdfunding initiatives to both accredited and non-accredited investors. Accredited investors have been introduced to new dealflow through “506 Reg D” websites they would have rarely been exposed to before due to 80-year-old securities laws.

Angel networks have gone national, traditional VC’s have gone up-market to more mature PE plays, and investors are building their individual online brand to show individual leadership in their picks. The law also opened the door to non-accredited investors, but their opportunity is still waiting in the wings while the SEC and FINRA finalize rules for their participation. The real question is whether non-accredited investors will be able to move the needle when they are allowed to participate.

This talk will provide insight on the actual state of non-accredited investor finances and shed light on the problems and opportunities that lie ahead of them. Non-accredited investors are still waiting for the Jobs Act rules to be finalized by the SEC and FINRA in order to be able to invest.

Takeaways:
-How much will non-accredited investors be able to invest?
-Is it a good idea for non-accredited investors to participate in seed round investments?

Ignite FinCon

#IgniteFinCon for a second year!

For the uninitiated, Ignite is a fun gathering of like-minded people where a democratically selected group of speakers get on stage for 5 minute talks on topics designed to entertain, educate, or excite you. Each talk is called a “spark” as it is supposed to “ignite” thought and conversation around a single idea.

But it is not so simple for the speakers… Each 5 minute conversion requires exactly 20 slides timed at 15 seconds a piece. Think of it as TED talks on speed.

Ask Me Anything About Tweetchats and Their Benefits
Tweetchats are a fun and innovative way for blogs and companies to get connected with their target audience. 71% of social media users say they are more likely to purchase from a brand they follow online, which is why companies invest heavily on Twitter -- some pay $120,000 per day to get listed on Twitter's promoted trends.

Wise Bread has created many tweetchats for clients that have naturally trended on Twitter for a tiny fraction of that cost, making it possible to not need $120,000 to be successful on Twitter!

We can show you how any blog or company can dramatically increase their exposure by hosting, sponsoring, or even just attending a Tweetchat.

Takeaways:

  • How hosting/sponsoring a tweetchat can improve your company or blog's bottom line.
  • Best and worst practices -- learn the step-by-step guide to setting up a successful tweetchat (even if you don't have a big following), how to choose viral topics and more.
  • How to get free marketing for yourself by simply attending someone else's tweetchat (without looking like a jerk).
